The Future of MJC Students Read

Hi All!
It was wonderful to read your posts this semester. Personally, I loved the book, and I get the impression that many of you enjoyed it as well. The faculty in the Literature & Language Arts Division are in the process of deciding on a new book for next year. What would you all suggest? Have you read any good books? Remember that we're looking for relatively new fiction or non-fiction that would be enjoyable for a wide audience.

Flood the blog with ideas...

Did you make it? If not, here's a snapshot:

Our faculty graciously volunteered to host a book discussion of The Kite Runner last night. Here's a snapshot of some of the interesting questions that were asked...

1. The Kite Runner has been a popular book, top of the bestseller lists; currently, it is often read on college campuses. Why do you think this book is so popular?
2. Is it possible for atonement or redemption that will make up for a bad thing we have done? Is there a “way to be good again” for Amir--or for any of us?
3. How authentic was the presentation of the Taliban in The Kite Runner?
4. Which is worse, death or personal destruction? In the novel, an orphanage director named Zaman “sells” a child monthly to a Taliban official—and uses the money to feed the other hungry orphans. Is he morally right or wrong? Is it OK to sacrifice one when others are in desperate need?

Big questions...anyone have any further answers?
